Light Rail In Memphis?

I couldn't believe my eyes when I passed by South Main and GE Patterson today. There, right in front of central station, was a light rail vehicle. When did Memphis get a light rail system?

Turns out the vehicle was on its way to Charlotte's new light rail system and was taking a break in Memphis. According to a Memphis Business Journal article this vehicle is typical of the vehicle that Memphis might use for its light rail system. It was nice to see a light rail vehicle in Memphis. Kinda makes imagining a system here easier. Here are some photos I took.

MATA should purchase one or two of these just to use on the Madison line.

I've heard about the St. Louis extension and the new Nashville system. Memphis is currently in the process of doing an environmental impact analysis of the first line we are planning on running from Downtown to the airport. You can fine more information on MATA's website. http://www.matatransit.com/pr_regrail.html

Tim: I don't know if you will get this, your site seems to be invaded by junk mail. I am a graduate arch student doing a thesis about introduing "mobility hubs" to Memphis and would like to know if you would be interested in sharing some of your information from your capstone? We share a lot of the same interests from viewing your profile. My email is jlthmps5@memphis.edu. Please contact me if you are still around. Thanks - Jenna
